Understanding the port and function of the port - According to the meaning of the word, the definition of a port is where the ship is docked. The harbor is a facility at the end of the ocean, river, or lake to receive ships and move cargo and passenger goods into it.

The port has tools specially designed to load and unload cargo of ships that are anchored.

Ports can also be defined as waters protected from ocean waves and equipped with terminal facilities include:

• Wharf, the place where the ship can be tethered for loading and unloading of goods.
• Crane, to carry out loading and unloading activities.
• Sea Warehouse (transito), a place to store cargo from a ship or to be transferred to a ship.

The port is a door to enter into a certain area and as a liaison infrastructure between regions, between islands, even between countries.

Port Function For a Ship

1. Gateway
   As a gatewaw of a country or region, because a ship may enter a country / territory through the port of the country or region concerned.
2. Interface
   The port serves as an interface (connecting), a port complete with facilities so that it can perform the transfer of cargo from sea (ship) to land transportation or vice versa.
3. Link
   Port serves as a link, the port is a link of the process of transporting (transporting) the cargo of the producer area (origin of goods) to the recipient's or consumer's territory.
4. Industry Entity (Estate / Zone)
   Ports as industry entities, ports are dynamic work environments, the provision of a variety of port facilities should be developed including facilities for industries, especially those with connections to shipping and other marine transportation.
