Important Tanks in Engine Room at Ship

Important Tanks in Engine Room at Ship - Engine Room is where the ship's main engine and tank. In this space there are various ship tanks. What are the types of tanks on the ship.

This is the Important Tank in the Engine Room at Ship

  • Fuel Oil Tanks
    No. 1 HFO Tank (P)
    No. 1 HFO Tank (S)
    No. 2 HFO Tank (P)
    No. 2 HFO Tank (S)

Note: There are four heavy fuel oil (HFO) tanks which is also called as bunker tanks. These are the highest capacity tanks on ship. Two tanks are located in port side and two are in starboard side generally. (P = Port side, S = Starboard side).

    HFO Service Tank
    HFO Settling Tank
    HFO Low Sulphur Service Tank
    HFO Low Sulphur Settling Tank
    MDO Tank (P)
    MDO Tank (S)
    MDO Service Tank
    MDO Settling Tank

Note: There are two marine diesel oil (MDO) tanks, one is located in port side and other is in starboard side.

There are service and settling tanks for HFO as well as MDO. Settling tank is used for purification of oil by gravity separation technique. Service tank is used for daily use prepared oil for respective applications. (MDO = Marine Diesel Oil).
  • Lubricating Oil Tanks
    M.E L.O Sump Tank
    M.E L.O Storage Tank
    M.E L.O Settling Tank
    G.E L.O Storage Tank
    G.E L.O Settling Tank
    Cylinder Oil Storage Tank
    Low TBN Cylinder Oil Tank

Note: There are lubricating oil tanks for main engine as well as generator engine. L.O Sump tank is used for supplying lubricating oil for purification. It is also called as drain tank. Storage tank is used for lube oil storage purpose and settling tank is used for purification by gravity separation. Lube oil is needed for main engine as well as auxiliary engine, that’s why there are separate tanks for auxiliary and main engine.

There is also cylinder oil tank for cylinder lubrication purpose as it is done through lube oil having some special characteristics. (TBN = Total Base Number).
  • Fresh Water Tanks
    H.T F.W Expansion Tank
    L.T F.W Expansion Tank
    Fresh Water Storage Tank

Note: Fresh water storage tank is used for storage of fresh water for general purposes like drinking, washing etc.

There are two types of expansion tanks used at ship for cooling purpose mainly. H.T F.W is used for cooling of main engine and L.T F.W is used for cooling of generator and for general purposes other than main engine. (L.T F.W = Low Temperature Fresh Water, H.T F.W = High Temperature Fresh Water).
  • Bilge, Sludge & Sewage Tanks
    Oily Bilge Tank
    Bilge Holding Tank
    Sludge Tank
    Sewage Holding Tank
    Waste Oil Service Tank

Note: Bilge water or bilge is collected in Oily Bilge Tank and this bilge water is transferred to Bilge Holding Tank through bilge pump. Sludge Tank is used to collect the sludge discharged from oil purifiers and other means. Sewage Holding Tank is used for holding sewage collected from sanitary system.  Waste Oil Service Tank is used to collect waste or unwanted oil onboard.
  • Other Special Tanks
    Stern Tube L.O Drain Tank
    Emergency G.E M.G.O Tank
    Cascade Tank (with Observation Tank)
    M.E Scavenging Air-box Drain Tank
M.E Air Cooler Chemical Cleaning Tank
    Stern Tube L.O Gravity Tank
    Soot Drain Tank

Note: Stern Tube Lube Oil system is maintained by drain tank and gravity tank. There is an emergency marine gas oil tank for generator engine. Soot Drain Tank is used for collecting soot washing of economizer. Cascade Tank and Observation Tank is used for boiler feed water system.

  1. Acid tanks are specialized containers used for storing various types of acids, including sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid. These tanks are constructed from materials that are highly resistant to corrosion and chemical degradation to ensure safe storage. Features such as secondary containment, venting systems, and leak detection are critical in acid tanks to prevent spills and leaks that could pose serious environmental and safety hazards. Regular inspection and maintenance of acid tanks are crucial to ensure their integrity and to comply with stringent safety regulations. Proper storage solutions are essential to safely manage and utilize industrial acids.
