Tips and Tricks for Marine Engineers - Hello, for junior marine engineers please read some Tips and Tricks for Marine Engineers. this is the first step before you practice. Please read to find out how it works
  1. Pump: Before starting, always open discharge valve first and then suction valve. After stopping, always close suction valve first and later discharge valve.
  2. Cooler (Heat Exchanger): To use (start), open outlet valves first and then open inlet valves. To stop, close inlet valves first and then outlet valves.
  3. In any fluid flowing system, pressure can be reduced by opening by-pass valve and pressure can be increased by closing by-pass valve.
example: fuel line by-pass valve, dump valve (steam)
  4. For checking, changing or taking away LO filters, always do purging first. If equalizing line is there, equalize by opening equalizing cock during changing.
  5. Valve opens in anti-clockwise direction & closes in clockwise direction generally. Use F-key (wheel-spanner) for opening & closing of large or tight or remote valves.
  6. Cock and some butterfly valve opens when parallel to pipeline & closes when perpendicular to pipeline.
  7. Almost all motors have ball bearing. Bearing damage can cause abnormal sound and malfunctioning of pump.
  8. Pump has either seal or gland not both. Drop leakage is permissible for lubrication & free rotation of shaft in gland of pump. So excess leakage can be reduced by gland tightening. Always tight in equal proportion. Be careful if pump is running.
  9. Most critical time for any bearing with regards to lubrication is during starting. That’s why always pre-lubricate the system (AE/ME) before starting.
  10. If two valves are in series. During opening, always open second valve then first valve. During closing, close first valve then second valve. It reduces stress.
  11. Non-return valves can be identified by either cross mark, arrow mark or NRV writen on valve body.
  12. Whenever standby pumps/machinery has to be started manually, always stop first running machinery then immediately start standby. Pipeline will be safe.
  13. ‘Beware of pressure vessels’. Always drain them before use and depressurize before any maintenance work. (Air bottles, Hydrophore unit etc.)
  14. Never over-tight any nut-bolts assembly and valves, otherwise it leads to permanent elongation and damage of threads.
  15. Lube oils & hydraulic oils must be topped up in moving machinery without fail, like Cylinder oil, governor oil, turbocharger oil, gear oil, compressor oil, steering gear oil etc.

  1. Very informative blog post. You would know that there is a massive difference between the theoretical knowledge provided in the maritime books and the practical skills that are acquired by getting one’s hands dirty in the engine room. Choosing the right college is very important for mariners. Take a look @ eurotechmaritime.org/
