Understanding and Function Breakwater

Understanding and Function Breakwater - Breakwater is a marine building designed to protect the coast from wave attack, usually made at a certain distance according to coastline conditions. This breakwater serves to destroy or absorb wave energy before it reaches the shore.

Breakwater is often encountered in the port area, because it has a very important function of protecting the harbor from the wave attack before it reaches the coast by absorbing some of the wave energy that comes.

Breakwater should be specially designed in accordance with the coastal areas to be protected so that the ocean currents do not cause siltation due to the sand that participates in the sediment currents and sedimentary sediment does not occur behind the breakwater structure. If this happens then coastal dredging is necessary.

2 types of Breakwater

  1. Shore-connected Breakwater
Shore-connected Breakwater is a type of structure that is directly related to shore or land
  2. Offshore Breakwater
Offshore Breakwater is a breakwater construction that is unrelated to the coastline and is made parallel to the coast and located at a certain distance from the coastline

Breakwater Function For Beach

  1. Protects the beach that lies behind it from wave attacks that can lead to erosion on the shore.
  2. Reduce or absorb wave energy before reaching the shoreline thus reducing sediment delivery.
