- Cargo carriers or cargo ships are characterized by large cargo to carry heavy materials and have distinctive appearance which is quite easy to distinguish.
- Passenger carriers are divided into two types of ships, they are cruise ships and ferries which you have been familiar with. Cruise ships are designed to carry large numbers of passengers which are characterized by sophisticated appearance and many decks. Meanwhile, ferries not only used to carry passengers but also vehicles.
- Industrial ships have function to carry out industrial process at sea such as building production rigs. The remarkable features of industrial ships are the incenator for industrial waste and also discharge stacks. Since the waste is hazardous, the waste cannot just be thrown to the sea since it can contaminate the water.
- Service vessel has function to provide propulsive power to other vessels. Service vessel are mostly used in harbours as well as inland water. Unlike cargo carriers, the size of service vessel is smaller and also has limited fuel.
- Non-commercial miscellaneous are typically owned by government for non-commercial purpose. Example of non-commercial miscellaneous is icebreaker. It can open up the way onto thick ice. Thus, this type of ship is designed with strong materials to avoid damage during the exploration on ice.
